André Masson

Self-educated erudite who dreamt of becoming fresco painter, he suffered very early on from the upheavals of his time. Traumatized by World War I that he lived on the front line and seriously injured on the Chemin des Dames, André Masson (1896-1987) remained a tormented soul with a quick temper, sometimes violent, but also an independent and lonely artist, rebellious against all forms of authority. He could be "gentle, cheerful and charming" according to his friends who gathered in his first workshop, rue Blomet, all brought together by friendship, literature and freedom of creation. He wrote about his neighbour Joan Miró and himself: "Our goal was to become poets-painters". On André Breton's request, in 1924, he joined and participated enthusiastically, but stormily, in the Surrealist Art Movement. He is the first painter of the group to explore the realm of dreams - in Freud and Leonardo da Vinci's wake - and to develop graphic automatism. Thereby, he is the pioneer of Surrealism art, and always on the move, of gestural painting that will later on influence the action painting artists in the USA. Fascinated by poetry, all types of music, painting and Eastern philosophy, Masson is the master of automatic drawing. With Max Ernst and Miró, he is one of the 20th century great creators, solely guided by his own words: "Where 'realism' and 'fantasy' no longer exist, the infinite is all that remains".
