WOLGANG PAALEN

In 1938 Wolfgang Paalen, a painter, writer and philosopher originally from Vienna (1905-1959) was considered to be one of the foremost surrealist painters. Which is why André Breton asked him to help organise - with particular responsibility for "the water and brushes" - the International Surrealism Exhibition which was to open in January in Paris. Six months later, Breton would provide the foreword for his personal exhibition, Galerie Renou et Colle. The following year, Paalen decided to leave Europe with his wife Alice Rahon, along with their friend Eva Sulzer. This journey to a New World offering the promise of a new language of pictorial inspiration - America's north-west coast - would undoubtedly provide him with the reasons and fuel for his subsequent book, coming some time later "Farewell to surrealism".
